GAP was commissioned by Public Health to run an eight week Arts for Wellbeing project for women in Gamesley, an under privileged area, the women referred to the group because of family difficulties, social isolation and mental health problems. The aim of the group was to give the women some time for themselves, we provided a crèche with qualified childcare workers, and enjoyed being creative. The project was led by the women and they decided on felt-making, we produced a beautiful wall hanging which will be unveiled at a celebratory gathering.

We were very pleased to announce that we have received confirmation that we have been awarded the Derbyshire Foundation,  Freemasons of Derbyshire Grass Roots Fund, this is for much needed specialist art equipment. We have quite a few participants with dexterity problems and we wish to buy equipment for them to make art more accessible.

Also we have been awarded money from NDVA for the development of the drama workshops for adults with learning disabilities, our aim is to reach more people in our area and to raise awareness of the importance of keeping active.

There is much research around the health problems of people with learning disabilities see quote.

“People with learning disabilities have a much greater propensity to develop health problems (both physical and mental) when compared with the general population.

Research suggests people with learning disabilities are 58 times more likely to die before the age of 50.  Respiratory and heart diseases are the leading causes of death for this group, and they are also more likely to have diabetes, sensory impairments, mental health problems or epilepsy.” (source) Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities.
