These groups are aimed at adults with learning disabilities. Some people attending come with support, but we have experienced volunteers able to help with participating in the sessions (although, we cannot provide personal care).
Hands on Art is exactly that – Hands on! We encourage our participants to use and improve their fine motor skills and dexterity with creativity. Clare, our resident Artist along with Rhoda, our Speech and Language Therapist create a half-termly timetable focusing on current themes such as Easter, Valentines Day, etc, aswell as the Olympics, Hands on Art’s Got Talent, World Day, etc. Rhoda uses music and movement activities – focusing on gentle exercise, role play, group games to improve co-ordination, communication and lots of fun.
We also have 3 dedicated volunteers that enable the groups to run smoothly and help participants with whatever they need at the sessions.
Come along during term time only, meet other people and explore your creative side.
There is a small charge of £5 per session to cover the materials used and refreshments. We can cater for certain dietary requirements where possible.
We have limited numbers so please get in touch beforehand to see if we have spaces available, see below for contact.

Self Portraits
We looked at our faces and drew each other. Three people drew Danny. We explored facial expressions and what they mean. We used newspapers, magazines to cut sections of the face out and added our own bits with pencils and pens.
Chinese New Year
In Chinese culture each year is a different animal which we use as inspiration for our artwork and look at the animals traits, likes, dislikes, etc. We ask the participants birth year to check what animal they are and represent this creatively. Here we used stencils and chalk pastels in traditional colours to create images. Trying Chinese foods, opening Fortune Cookies and looking at a different cultures celebratory events enhances our knowledge and understanding.
Jute Bags
People drew around their own hands using pens and embellished the designs. Darren said he was going to use his to hold his knitting.
Christmas
Each Christmas we are invited to decorate a Christmas Tree ay Lymefield Garden Centre, Broadbottom as part of their festive celebrations. We choose the theme by putting our ideas into a pot and chosen randomly, a very democratic process! ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’, ‘Trees’, ‘Disney’, are some past themes we’ve had and created wonderful decorations using lots of glitter. We all take a trip there to adorn the trees with our creations and drink their yummy hot chocolate.
Jelly Fish
As well as the Christmas fair at Lymefield Garden Centre they also have a Summer Food Fair and ask local community groups to make a creation using only a hanging basket. After much deliberation we, of course, settled on the theme of a Jellyfish! Using only old textiles, fabrics, ribbons, cord, etc, we upcycled them by drawing, writing, creating patterns that were hung onto the basket and bejewelled with sequins, buttons, beads, etc.
